Mayor pledges action after half of London's LGBT+ venues closed their doors in the last decade

Sadiq Khan reiterated his commitment to London's openness and night-time economy. London has lost more than half of its LGBT+ venues since 2006, new research has found.

In 2006 there were 125 venues in operation around the capital, but in 2017 there are just 53.

Kensington and Chelsea lost all four LGBT+ venues between 2006 and 2017, including iconic venue The Queen's Head.

Westminster still has the highest concentration of LGBT+ venues but has lost 16 over the same period despite Soho being an iconic LGBT+ neighbourhood.

In 2015, the Annual Population Survey found 1.7% of adults in the UK identified themselves as lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) (Figure 1). This comprised:

- 1.1% who identified themselves as gay or lesbian

- 0.6% who identified themselves as bisexual

- A further 0.4% of the population identified themselves as "Other" which means that they did not consider themselves to fit into the heterosexual or straight, bisexual, gay or lesbian categories.

- A larger group, 4.1%, refused or didn't know how to identify themselves.

Diversity Role Models with Brook - to develop and deliver training on tackling HBT bullying to 10,000 teachers and staff in 400 schools.

EACH - to deliver a training and resource programme in schools across Avon and Somerset.

Educate & Celebrate - to train staff in 60 schools, giving them confidence and strategies to address HBT language and bullying and promote inclusiveness throughout the school environment and the curriculum.

National Children's Bureau - to train 1,500 teachers on tackling homophobia, biphobia and transphobia through PSHE.

Show Racism the Red Card - to hold workshops with 2,000 young people at football clubs around England, train 200 teachers and run a film competition for young people on tackling HBT bullying.

Stonewall - to extend and share its 'train the trainer' course with 60 partner organisations, enabling them to run the programme with schools in their local communities and giving them the skills to tackle HBT bullying.
